The Road to Mecca, by Athol Fugard, is based on the eccentric South African sculptor Helen Martins. The plot follows the life of the reclusive widow Helen, obsessed with her sculptural work (the creation of a garden of sculptures oriented toward Mecca) and her difficult relationships with the community where she lives in 1974, in the midst of apartheid.

The arrival of a young teacher working as a social worker from Cape Town triggers a confrontation between the two (the outside world versus the inner world), revealing the determined struggle of the independent artist against a society strictly governed by rules.
